Mon 22nd June 2009 - Tue 23rd June 2009 : FREE car seat safety checks for the people of Bristol as part of Child Safety Week:

Parents in Bristol have the opportunity to get their children’s car seats checked for free on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd June.

The car seat checks take place outside the Mothercare store in Eastville Retail Park where locals can pop along throughout the day to get professional advice and hands on guidance on how to choose and correctly fit the right child seat, according to their childrens age and height and the car they drive.

The initiative has been organised by Britax, a leading car seat manufacturer,  the AA and Mothercare. Bristol is one of 11 nationwide events, all taking place during this year's Child Safety Week (22nd - 26th June). The aim of Child Safety Week is to raise awareness of the number of accidents that tragically lead to serious injury or death of children and young people and how to prevent them.

With over half of British families expected to holiday in the UK this summer due to the economic downturn, and specifically 59% in the South West, the road show aims to ensure maximum safety for families living in Bristol before they start their journeys.

The scheme has been launched on the back of recent research revealing that children aged six and under are involved in around 25,000 road collisions a year while travelling in cars, whilst two thirds of child seats in the UK are not fitted securely. The research also revealed that a quarter of drivers experience difficulty in fitting a child seat.

Mark Bennett from Britax says " We find it extremely alarming how many people are unaware that their car seats are fitted incorrectly, and want to do as much as we can to educate parents on the solutions available.”

Edmund King, President of the AA explains "With so many families hitting the UK roads for their summer holidays this year, the correct fitting of children's car seats is of paramount importance. We're delighted to be working alongside Britax and Mothercare to help the people of Bristol ensure maximum child safety before they embark on their road trips this summer."

Britax and AA patrols will be offering demonstrations of the ISOFIX safety systems on Britax AA ISOFIX child car seats, to show just how easy and safe the ISOFIX system is. The systems eliminate misfitting problems, which are common with the use of adult belts, and improve the dynamic performance of child restraints, as the seat is rigidly attached to the car structure. The vast majority of new car models since 2006 (and several previous models) have ISOFIX installed as standard.
