Fri 31st October 2008 - Afrika Eye 2008:

Afrikan Eye is all about opening our eyes and creating a more positive atmosphere for Africa and African people. The festival lasts just over a week and offers an abundance of films showing at the watershed (with one exception), and many discussion seminars and workshops to encourage young people to sample different aspects of work in programme making and celebrate the best of African film.

The film festival kicks off at 7pm on the 31st with the premiere 'Return to Goree' directed by Pierre-Yves Bourgeaud.

Enjoy following the journey around the world, of African singer Youssou N'dour as he attempts to bring back African slave music, to the Island Goree, off the coast of Senegal, that symbolises the slave trade and stand to commemorate its victims today.

'Return to Goree' gives you a taster of an evocative west African sound, so the ogranisers of Afrika Eye feel thats what they ought to deliver, and they have! There will be live music from Tamana Foli, master musicains from west Africa and the UK. They bring with them a funky blend of traditional sound from their sub-Saharan roots.

A highlight event, not to be missed is the Scriptwriting workshop running 5.30pm-7.30pm, Thursday 6th November. It will be led by co-director of Afrika Eye Ingrid Sinclair, a writer and director of documentary and fiction with over 20 years experience. This is an opportunity to share valuable knowledge whilst Ingrid leads an introduction to the basics. But places are limited so book yours early. (Enquiry Desk 0117 92237250, Bristol Central Library Cafe).

Attendance does not require any experience, and the class covers issues such as storytelling, ideas, writing and practical considerations.

After the success of Afrika Eye 2007, it was only, and rightly brought back once again by popular demand. And it goes without saying the help of dedicated volunteers is so crucial and make it possible for us to once again enjoy it in 2008.
