Music Interview with Bubbz
Bubbz aka Chief Bossman talks to us about the music scene of Bristol right now. Here we have the fantastic opportunity to ask Bubbz, originally from London, with ghanian parents, a few questions about himself and his music. An extremely talented rapper stroke producer is going to give us a glimpse at the hard work he does, and the rewards it brings.
When did you first realise you had a serious interest in music?
from the moment I heard my mum’s heart beat in the womb aww how cheesey ! (laugh) no probably when I got kicked off the clarinet lessons for learning to slow, “you don't know what you got till its gone and all of that’’ my fault though I was far too distracted with trying to get girls and playing football, so I guess that's about year 9. How old are you in year 9 ? 14 I think !
What kind of artists are you listening to on your I-pod at the moment?
DJ Mano, Diplo, Spank Rock, Justice, DJ Medhi. Andree 3000, Lil Wayne, TY, Roots Manuva, Kenna, Munk, Turbo wolf, Black Ghost, Curtis Mayfield.
What does music mean to you?
The world, without it life would be so flippin dull, but coz it means so much it can also break your heart, do I sound like a man who is in love ..lol
How long have you lived in Bristol?
Too long..... nah about 6 yrs now I think !
What do you like about the city?
St Pauls, Montpelier, Bedminster. I guess I really love the city’s ability to inspire me and the its diversity.
Where would you go to hear good music when you are out for an evening in Bristol?
Tube, or any Blast or Donuts nights
Are there any local artists in the Bristol area who are heading for big things, and you would recommend checking out, apart from yourself of course?
Jacob Anderson, amazing vocalist he just had a main role in Adulthood , his on my Album ‘Bubbz for Rhyme Minister’.
Turbo Wolf there probably the biggest band in Bristol, there on my Album too
Cassette Baby phenomenal team, there also on my Album.
Jim Morray a massive folk act who I’ve just recorded with, look for his new album its gets a review in the Guardian shortly.
Joker the biggest Bristol Dubstep producer got some stuff with him in the pipe line.
Do you have any memories of performing in the Bristol area which stand out for you?
Opening for Mark Ronson, the crowd were large and we rocked the show.
Do you have any advice for up and coming artists in the Bristol area? Is it really being in the right place at the right time like some say, is it purely hard work, or a mixture of both?
Its a mixture of both, my only advice would be learn how to get on with people, or find someone who can work on your behalf and get on with people. You can have the best music in the world if you don’t get on with people nobody will help you. That aside i’m learning something new every day so be prepared for that as well as 15hr days.
Could you give us an idea of how many hours you put into your music in an average week?
12 – 15hrs 4-5 days a week.
Finally, if you weren't a musician, what do you think you would be doing instead?
I'dI'd be a stock broker...puff I don't know... I got a Pharmacology degree, so I guess I'd be serving a different kind of medicine aside from music.
Bubbz, is there anything at all you would like to add?
Don't sleep on me! Tell your Grandma her friends your friends, your spouse, and all the others in between, that Bubbz is about to shine brighter than the sun, with enough good music for every day of the year.
Also check out my new show on Ujima FM every Sat 6-8pm, playing the best in alternative urban music, lol what does that actually mean, maybe someone should do a spoof showing of the best in rural music, ha ha
Thank you for your time Bubbz, good luck with everything and we hope to see you performing soon. Check out the events list for information about where you can see Bubbz in Bristol. Check out Bubbz's own website for more information and to hear his music http://www.bubbz.co.uk . Also check out itunes for his amazing new track 'Be Easy' or watch the video on Youtube.
