NCH Children's Charity Abseil, Sun 30/03/2008
by: Kirsty Nash
This weekend (Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th March 2008) the NCH, (the Children's Charity) organised a charity fundraising abseil off of the Avon gorge in Bristol. Willing participants volunteered to raise money through sponsorship and agreed to be dangled from 120 feet overlooking the Portway. Participation was good with 50 abseiling on Saturday and 40 on Sunday. The weather Saturday was not good, yet the team battled on through the rain. Sunday brought sunshine and those lucky enough to abseil in the better weather had brilliant views of the bridge and the Portway like they've never seen before. The enthusiastic atmosphere was catching and everyone was caught up in the excitement. Many had never had such an experience before.
The National Children's Charity work hard to organise such activities and raise money in order to support children in the UK. They do work further afield too but much of their work helps influence the lives of children in Bristol, the city many of us share. For example they have over 50 projects currently running in the south west of England which aim to provide support to children who are unable to live with their birth families, disabled children and children who experience a range of physical and emotional challenges. If you are at all interested in taking part in such an event, as an individual or larger party (get everyone at work involved!) then the NCH have their own website. It's not only abseiling which you can do, they offer zip sliding, marathon running or skydiving and you get a medal and certificate as a keepsake. For more information visit http://www.nch.org.uk
Do remember it's all about doing something different and having fun, but it is so worthwhile as all money raised goes to a fantastic cause. Thank you NCH and the professionals who work hard to make things happen!
Updated: 14th April 2008:
NCH originally set out to raise £12,000. They are thrilled to announce that, to date they have raised £12,803 - and the money is still coming in.
A big thanks to everyone involved.
